Eight & Sand Beer Co. to Host Thanksgiving Eve Party
with New Limited Edition Beer on Tap

Eight & Sand will host a Thanksgiving Eve party on Wednesday, November 21st
from 5pm – 10pm featuring new beers from the beertender brewing competition
and the return of our GABF award-winning Bad Hombre.

– FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

WOODBURY, NJ (November 16, 2018) – On Wednesday, November 21st, Eight & Sand Beer Co. gives thanks to fans, friends and family by hosting a Thanksgiving Eve celebration at the Woodbury, NJ tasting room from 5pm until 10pm.

The party will feature 3 brand new brews on tap that were created by brewers Chris, Jim and Dave in conjunction with Eight & Sand’s beertenders.  Each of the three recipes can be sampled by event attendees who will select the winning brew in conjunction with a panel of judges.  The three beer recipes include a Grilled Pineapple Hefeweizen, Peaches & Cream Milkshake IPA and a Peat-Smoked Scotch Ale.

“All of our beertenders love beer just as much as our brewers love making it, so we thought this competition would give them a chance to get even more involved in the brewing process and share their ideas for some really unique beer styles.”, says owner Chris Mazzone.  “We’re letting our whole team get in on the creative side of things and letting our fans decide which beer they like best.”

In addition to the 3 new beers on tap, a very limited quantity of the GABF Silver Medal winning Bad Hombre ale makes its return to the tasting room for the night.  The Potato Pototo food truck will also be nearby on Deptford Ave. throughout the evening.

“We’ve had fans of our beer thank us for making it and we’re happy to bring back an old favorite and three new styles as our way of thanking them for supporting us for over two years.”, says Mazzone.  “We look forward to seeing some familiar faces and hopefully many new ones at our Thanksgiving Eve party on Wednesday.”

More information on this event can be found at www.eightandsandbeer.com.

Breweries Food

Beer. It’s What’s with Dinner Featuring Pinelands Brewing Co.

In this edition we travel North on the Garden State Parkway to Pinelands Brewing Company in Little Egg Harbor. We met with head brewmaster and founder, Jason Chapman, who was a gracious host and chock full of knowledge about beer. Pinelands Brewing Company is a 3 BBL brewery which opened on March 1, 2014 and, in that short period of time, has quickly become a local and regional favorite. Locally sourced ingredients and water from the Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer, which has an estimated 17.7 trillion gallons of some of the best all natural drinking water in the world, is a big reason for that. The only problem we had was picking the right beer from their great stable of brews to pair with the food I prepared, but that’s the fun part. Let’s begin.

Cheese Course

Once again, quality deserves quality, so we went with DiBruno Bros Prima Donna. This sweet, nutty, firm cheese is slightly oily with a bit of salt. Originated in Holland, its inspiration was to create a hybrid of Parmigiano Reggiano and Gouda which will pair nicely with most beers. As Jason and I mulled over the tap list, we both agreed to go with Swamp Donkey IPA. Don’t let the name fool you, this is a great brew with an aroma and taste consisting of Amarillo and two other American hops. The color is great with a great balance of floral and fruit and a nice dry finish. Swamp Donkey was a great choice for the cheese, and with a robust 6.8% ABV this donkey has a kick.

Appetizer

For the appetizer I went with an oldie, but a goodie. I stuffed baby Portabello Mushrooms with my hot crab dip recipe, and topped them off with a nice French Emmental. This is a medium hard Swiss which has a savory yet mild taste.  I can never seem to make enough of these scrumptious little flavor bombs!  We chose to go with Sharp Shooter IPA, a beer that made for their friends at Shooters Gun and Archery Range down the street from the brewery. This bronzed colored ale has a citric character which lends itself well to this seafood dish. With a moderate body and malty backbone, it was definitely the right choice for this appetizer.

Entrée

For the main course I went with something I’ve made about 100 times. My pulled pork tacos with blue cheese coleslaw is a dish I feel I’ve finally perfected. It takes 12 hours to get the pork butts to fall apart, tender. The blue cheese coleslaw was inspired by my wife’s love of the fragrant cheese. Looking over the tap list their was one beer that stood out. It was the first Pinelands Brewery Beer I tried the day the brewery opened, Pitch Pine Ale. This crisp American Pale Ale made from Chinook and Cascade hops is a very easy drinking beer. With a 5.9% ABV it can go with a lot of dishes and was a favorite at a Memorial Day Party I had a few years ago. Definitely a go to any time I see it on tap.

Dessert

For dessert I tapped into a family resource. My daughter, Lauren, is in the culinary program at ACIT and is enrolled in ACCC for Baking and Pastry this fall. One of her decadent desserts is her Espresso Chip Meringues. Although these little flavor pillows are light as air, they burst with espresso and chocolate flavor. There were two choices for this dessert: Zero Shucks Given Oyster Stout and Evan John Porter. Don’t let the Oyster Stout name fool you, this is a smooth and silky stout with big flavor! After taking with Jason, we decided to go with the Evan John Porter. This delicious Porter made with whole vanilla beans is smooth and complex, making it a perfect match for the Meringues, and it also is great all on it’s own. With an abundant tap list, Pinelands Brewing Company is definitely worth the drive for great beers and great atmosphere. Til’ next time…

Enjoy your pour!

Cape May Brewing Company Releasing the Latest in Their Barrel Aged Series, Brothel Madam, on 5/27

Cape May Brewery’s next entry into their Barrel Aged Series has been announced and we cannot wait to try it!  Love the idea of a fruited sour!  Yet another reason that you need to get to South Jersey and try some of the fantastic beer that is being brewed here!

From the Press Release:

Cape May Brewing Company, the Jersey Shore’s premier local brewery, is pleased to announce a new iteration in their highly acclaimed Barrel Aged Series. Brothel Madam — a barrel-aged golden sour ale conditioned on raspberries and cranberries — releases from their Tasting Room at 1288 Hornet Road in the Cape May Airport on Saturday, May 27th.

“Last year’s Barrel Aged Series was a huge success,” says CMBC president and co-founder Ryan Krill, “and this year should prove to be no different. While last year’s brews were nautically-themed, this year we’ve decided to focus on the numerous ghost stories that abound throughout Cape May.”

Cape May is well-known as haven for the spectral. No fewer than five books have been written about the ghosts of Cape May, the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities runs seven ghost tours throughout the city, and Syfy’s Ghost Hunters did an episode in the town.

When searching for inspiration for the theme of this year’s Barrel Aged Series, Graphic Designer Courtney Rosenberg commiserated with Beertender Maddie Macauley for Cape May-inspired themes, eventually settling upon the phantasmal.

“These aren’t Casper the Friendly kind of ghosts,” Rosenberg says, “they’re ghosts or spirits that have a story at many of the locations people visit daily in Cape May.”

One of Cape May’s bed and breakfast gems, The Queen Victoria, has a building called the House of Royals, which housed a brothel and gaming parlour in the 1800s, where the most powerful men of Victorian America were among her clientele. Reportedly, visitors to the establishment have reported the ghostly apparition of the building’s former manager drifting aimlessly along her halls, searching out the errant customer, dreadfully behind on his payments to the house.

For this brew, Cape May Brewing Company has created a barrel-aged American sour ale, conditioned on raspberries and cranberries. After fermenting the base with Brett for several months in a stainless steel fermenter, the fruits were added before racking the brew into used oaken red wine barrels for about six months. Then, Brothel Madam has been bottle-conditioned for two weeks before release.

While this is CMBC’s first fruited sour, they’re not all that uncommon, with mango, peach, guava, watermelon, acai, kiwi, and apricot being some common fruits brewers tend to use. The base of Brothel Madam already had some notes of peach and apricot and some tartness from the Brett, so this recipe plays up that tartness and increases the fruitiness with some raspberry and cranberry.

“The base was good but simple, with some classic Brett esters, some notes of stone fruits, and just a touch of tart from the Brett as well,” says CMBC Director of Brewing Operations Jimmy Valm. “It was good, but needed a little je ne sais quoi, and we knew this was our beer to add fruit.”

In addition to those fruit flavors, the brew has some wood character from the barrels and a slight vinous character from the red wine they’d held a few years back. In addition, the barrels allow for some micro-oxidation which will greatly increase the complexity of the flavors in the aged beer.

The bottle design is meant to evoke thoughts of the haunted houses that abound throughout Cape May.

“Just think about walking down Decatur Street or Jackson Street in Cape May,” Rosenberg says. “The house colors, the gingerbread, the windows and so on.”

Like the first run of the Barrel Aged Series, the labels will all be variations on a theme.

“The colors will match the houses in Cape May, and there will be similarities between each bottle,” Rosenberg continues. “When you line them up, you will have a lineup of houses you might see on the streets of Cape May.”

Releasing Memorial Day Weekend, the brewers at CMBC think Brothel Madam is the perfect brew to begin the summer season.

“This fruity explosion is going to be great for sitting on the porch as the gentle summer breeze blows by,” Valm says.

Head Brewer Brian Hink agrees. “I dig it, and I think it’s the perfect beer to be coming out Memorial Day Weekend. It’ll be a great summer beer, one I really look forward to going back to again and again.”

Brothel Madam releases from Cape May Brewing Company’s Brewtique at 1288 Hornet Road in the Cape May Airport on Saturday, May 27th, at noon for $20.
